Jay D. Brownstein

Jay Brownstein, a founding partner in Brownstein Nguyen & Little LLP, has been practicing law more than 20 years. Since 1994, Mr. Brownstein has represented individuals primarily in cases involving wrongful death and personal injury, negligence, premises liability, consumer and investor fraud, and business torts. From 1988 to 1994, he litigated bankruptcy and creditors’ rights, shareholder, contract, licensing and other commercial disputes in the state and federal courts of Georgia, Virginia and Maryland. Mr. Brownstein has acted as lead and co-counsel in numerous consumer and insurance class actions, including one involving the rights of 70,000 policyholders following the conversion of a non-profit healthcare insurer to a for-profit company.

Mr. Brownstein graduated Florida State University in 1985 with a B.S. in communication, and in 1988 he received his law degree from the Emory University School of Law. Mr. Brownstein was admitted to the state bars of Georgia in 1988 and Virginia in 1991. He is also admitted to practice in federal courts in Georgia, Virginia and Maryland, including the Fourth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeals.

Mr. Brownstein began practicing law in Atlanta, Georgia as an associate with Branch, Pike & Ganz (now Holland & Knight). From 1990 to 1994, he practiced in Virginia and Washington, D.C. with the firms Hunton & Williams, Henry & Conroy and Fenwick & West. In 1994, Mr. Brownstein co-founded the general practice firm of Brownstein & Nguyen LLC in Atlanta, Georgia, now known as Brownstein Nguyen & Little LLP, where he continues his civil litigation practice.

Mr. Brownstein is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, Dekalb Bar Association and Georgia Trial Lawyers Association. He is committed to the ideals espoused by those organizations, including the preservation of the civil justice system and the constitutional right to a jury trial. Owing to these principles, Mr. Brownstein focuses his practice on representing individuals and small business owners in litigation against individual and corporate wrongdoers.

Mr. Brownstein is peer-rated AV by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating for ethics and skill, and is honored to be recognized as one of Georgia's top plaintiff attorneys by Georgia Trend's 2009 Legal Elite publication. In addition to his practice, Mr. Brownstein serves as a part-time instructor in the Kessler-Edison Trial Techniques Program and State Bar of Georgia Orientation on Professionalism at Emory University School of Law. He is also a Fellow of the Lawyers Foundation of Georgia.

Born in Merritt Island Florida in 1963, Mr. Brownstein practices law with his wife and law partner, Tien Nguyen, a native of Vietnam. Mr. Brownstein and Ms. Nguyen have one daughter, age 8. In his spare time, Mr. Brownstein enjoys music, reading, real estate, fitness and doing just about anything with his daughter.

  • Lead counsel for insured patients of Georgia hospitals in putative class actions involving the alleged improper filing and prosecution of hospital liens.
